You know that feeling when you wake up to freshly cleaned clothes, a spotless kitchen, and a squeaky clean bathroom? If you are like “hmmm I think I know that feeling” do not feel bad at all because I totally understand. Nothing screams productivity like a fresh and clean apartment but as a busy graduate student, it can be very easy to convince myself to prioritize other things. I can’t count how many times I have told myself, “Oh, that can wait for later.” Before I know it, all those tasks I told myself I would do later build up and I eventually find myself spending the entire weekend trying to catch up on laundry, sweeping and mopping the floors, tidying the bathroom, every single time. Can you relate?
Well, starting today, we are going to put together some simple things we can add to our evening routines to avoid those long cleaning days. That way we can spend more time doing other things that are important to us. Plus, who doesn’t love waking up to a clean apartment? Let’s right dive in!
Stop #1: The Kitchen
After cooking dinner, wash all of your dishes so they can dry overnight and in the morning while you are making your breakfast or morning tea, put them away to keep your space tidy and clean. Don’t forget to wipe down the counters and stove and put any stray books, paper, etc. where they belong. If you have some extra time, quickly push your Swiffer (or sweep) across the floor to pick up any dirt.
Want to make it a little more fun? Put together a playlist or have Netflix playing in the background. A clean kitchen is the first step to a fresh and clean apartment.
Stop #2: Laundry
If it is laundry day, put a load of laundry into the washer and dryer! Having a set day or two is so much better than randomly throwing them in the wash whenever you run out of undies. Pick two days and choose to make those days specifically laundry days. That way you are washing less and spending your time wisely! We all know how long doing laundry can take.
Pro Tip: When the dryer stops, fold your laundry as soon as possible. Do not wait and throw them somewhere else. Nothing screams clean apartment like the smell of freshly cleaned clothes, right?!
Stop #3: The Living Room
Pick up the items that are not supposed to be there and put them back where they should be. Fluff the pillows and move furniture where it belongs. If you have a table, wipe off the table.
Stop #4: The Bathroom
After you have showered and prepped for bed, put all your items back where they belong and wipe down your counter. Make sure there is enough toilet paper and wipe the mirror down if it any water splashed on it while doing your night routine.
Stop #5: The Bedroom
Your bedroom should always be the most sacred place in your apartment. Light a relaxing candle and pick up any items that may be on the floor. Tidy up your nightstand and only with only the most important things at the bedside. Hang up any lingering clothes and grab a glass of water to put by your bedside to drink before you officially sleep.
Although cleaning can be a drab, by cleaning up your living space, you are honoring yourself by setting yourself up for success. You are lowering the chance for anxiety to creep up on you in the morning when you find yourself waking up late on accident and having to step over clothes and cook breakfast with dirty dishes in the sink. Even if you choose not to EVERYTHING on this list daily, try making your own list of five or six things to add to your evening routine to keep your apartment clean! See you next week. Remember, you are blessed, brilliant, and beautiful!
