Hello, blessed, brilliant, beauties!
I know it has been quite a bit since I have blogged due to the holiday season, but I am super excited to be back sharing with you all my little secrets that helped me become a #girlboss! So Urban Dictionary defines a “girl boss” as the following:
A woman in control, taking charge of her own circumstances in work & life. Someone who knows her worth and won’t accept anything less. She is not a “mean girl” in fact, she hates “mean girls.” She is empowering and inspiring to those around her.
Just as you read above, a #girlboss is strong, hard-working, and intelligent. So you are probably wondering about these secrets…keep scrolling below to find out!
Write Down Everything
Maybe I get this from being a writer but, I am always writing things down. I always have a little notebook on me so I can jot down important dates, inspirations surrounding me, and sometimes even goals I want to set for myself! As a #girlboss, you have a million, trillion things that are going on in your head at all times. Give that brain a break and put it on paper. Plus, once it is on paper, it goes from being an intangible idea to an actual reality! From your feelings to an extra credit assignment, always have a pen and notebook handy to write it all down.
Sprinkle Kindness Everywhere You Go
Girls, stop being mean to each other. I see so many girls on social media and even around my campus that are so focused on putting other girls down, they can’t even grow themselves because they just possess too much negative energy. Sorry to break it to you but the best #girlbosses out there are those who are not only working extremely hard but, pulling other women up as they climb to the top of their mountain. Use kind words and treat people how you would want to be treated because you never know when you might possibly need those people. So even if others just don’t understand, be a #girlboss and lead by example by spreading kindness through your actions and words. As Maya Angelou says, “…people never forget how you made them feel.”
Know Your Limits and Take Care of Yourself
Being a #girlboss takes a lot of time commitment. As a blogger, pageant girl, children’s literature researcher, advocate for girls’ education, and a full-time college student, I am always doing something. Some days (most days) it is amazing and so humbling to have so many blessings flow through me. Other days, I feel extremely overwhelmed and lonely because once you have decided to grind until you reach your dreams, sometimes that means you have to choose between a lot of things that your friends may not have to choose from. And trust me, that can be so frustrating. Sometimes you have to choose to study over going to the party or taking a nap instead of going to chill with your besties. A #girlboss has to be so in tuned with herself that she knows when she has had enough and when she can hang on a little longer. She can tell when it is time to step away from some friends and she even knows when she needs to take a day (or two) to herself. This is probably the hardest secret to figure out because it does take a lot of self-honesty. However, I promise, once you are able to figure out your limits, you are just going to soar!
Prioritize What is Important
As I sit here trying to figure out what to say about this secret, I smile to myself. Isn’t it funny how the things we sometimes put so much value on during periods in our lives mean absolutely nothing two years later? My dad always says, “Although things may be of value to you, they aren’t always a priority during that time.” Basically, that means that its okay to change your priorities about people, objects, goals, and dreams because it doesn’t mean that you don’t value them, it just means that at this minute right now in your life, they are not a priority. So stop feeling guilty about choosing yourself over your friends sometimes. Stop comparing yourself to other girls who you think are “doing better” than you. Be the #girlboss that is able to move like water so she can gracefully flow into her greatness by being able to shift and change things in her life with ease.
Hustle Hard, Pray Harder
If the #girlboss life is the life you choose, know that it comes with ups and downs just like anything else in life. Not only do you have to be your own biggest cheerleader, but you have to find something to keep you going and for me, that is prayer. God has given me so many talents to share with this world but sometimes it can be hard when I feel so different than others. It took me a while to realize it but Matthew 5:14-16 helped me regain my focus. It says…
“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
-Matthew 5:14-16
So work hard blessed, brilliant, beauty! Nobody ever said it would be easy. But God made you to be the light of the world! So use what He has given you and go get ’em! Oh, and before you start, remind yourself that you are blessed, brilliant, and beautiful!
See you next week! TD <3

Everything you said here was so on point! Another thing I think really sets a #girlboss apart from the rest is when they are able to acknowledge that they need to regroup and reevaluate what is going on in their life and strive to do better!

I love this I’m so glad you mentioned being kind. It’s so important to remember to be kind and help those that need it. You never know when you’re going to need a helping hand yourself. Also, if I didn’t write everything down, I’d get nothing done.

Pinning this because it’s such a good reminder! If I don’t write everything down, I won’t remember anything!

I love the inspiration to be strong and own the girlboss in us all. I recently read that “discipline = freedom” and it made so much sense. Focus on what you love, be proactive, and you’ll be able to go far.
