Own Your Everyday by Jordan Lee Dooley Book Review

August 5, 2019 Beautiful Books, Everyday Life

It is about that time for another book review! ( I know, I have been such a bad bookworm, lately. I am working on it). Last week, I listened to Jordan Lee Dooley’s newest book called, “Own Your Everyday: Overcome the Pressure to Prove and Show Up for What You Were Made to Do.” When I was in college, Jordan Lee Dooley was the writer of one of my favorite Christian blogs called ‘Soul Scripts.’ She even started a social media campaign called #YourBrokennessIsWelcomeHere, which I completely loved. This movement was created to “share a better, truer message with the world full of division, judgment and competition.” She started as a Christian writer and moved towards writing and giving advice through her podcast called ‘The She Podcast’ on a lot of topics including relationships, starting a business, and living a healthy lifestyle.

Here is some basic info..

  • Title: Own Your Everyday: Overcome the Pressure to Prove and Show Up for What You Were Made to Do.
  • Author: Jordan Lee Dooley
  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Genre: Christian, Self-Help
  • Age Group: High School Girls (Junior/Senior) / College Girls / TwentySomethings
  • Length: 4hr 32 min on Audible; 240 Pages (Goodreads)
  • My Rating: 4.0/5.0

My Thoughts…

So I am always really iffy on the idea of ‘self-help’ books depending on the day you catch me. Some days I am all for them while other days I will read the first couple of pages and think, “What in the world is this author talking about” or “…Here we go again.”

To be honest, when I first picked up this book at the airport, I read the first couple of lines then immediately put it back down. I don’t know what it was, but it didn’t grasp me at all.

A couple of months later, I decided to download it on audible and I have to admit as soon as I started the second part of the book, I was pretty hooked by the gems she drops during that section.

Jordan Lee Dooley uses her own experiences from her youth, college, womanhood, marriage life, and so much more to create a space where she shares some of her mistakes and lessons learned in a way that addresses some really important issues that young women often carry heavy on their hearts.

The first couple of chapters were okay to me. Nothing really stood out and I found myself listening to the book just to listen. I didn’t really connect with her until I started Chapter 7 where she talks about overcoming comparison with compassion and communication.

Jordan Lee Dooley talks about topics such as overcoming perfectionism (which hit hard for me), overcoming distraction with discipline (which also hit super hard), and so much more. Honestly, Part Two of the book was my favorite.

Overall, if you are looking for a quick read and you are a young woman between the ages of 18-25, I think this would be a great easy read and a breath of fresh air that you might need. I also think this needs to be on every college girl’s reading list because I wish I would’ve read this during my sophomore or junior year in college.

Jordan Lee Dooley also has a super cool guide to follow if you are interested in making it a group read with your gal pals! You can find that with this link here.

If you are interested in reading, here is the link to the book! Enjoy! Comment below what you think if you have read it!
